The CLINCHER Top Drive Make/Break (TDMB) Tool has been developed to significantly reduce the safety risks, downtime and physical efforts required for drilling rig crews to service the upper internal blow-out preventer valves (IBOP) used with VARCO Model TDS-3, TDS-4 and TDS-5 Top Drives. Field trials of the new CLINCHER TDMB Tool have proven this tool eliminates the need to remove the Pipe Handler, disassemble portions of the top drive or use manual rig tongs when servicing the upper IBOP valves. This reduces the 8 to 12 hours of rig time formerly required to service the upper IBOP valve to as little as 1 to 2 hours.

The CLINCHER TDMB Tool is simple and has few moving parts yet it has the capacity to develop up to 130,000 ft lbs of torque when driven by the rig's 2000 psi hydraulic power supply. This power insures TDMB tools will breakout connections the VARCO PH60 or PH 85 Pipe Handlers cannot accommodate. A pneumatic brake intensifier is provided for permanent installation on the top drive to boost braking force when it is necessary to operate at very high torques. The lower portion of the this tool is designed to be anchored in the rig's Master Bushing's kelly drive sockets in used with 27 ½ and 37 ½ inch API Rotary Tables (ref API Specification 7K table 5 and figure 7). This compact and portable tool, along with its control console, are easily stored on the rig and readily moved in place using rig winches.
